Five years ago, most aerospace and defense companies didn't have these titles. Today they're becoming much more common. The interesting part isn't that new titles are appearing. It's that several of them still don't have a consistent definition.

As AI, autonomy, digital manufacturing, and software-defined systems have become larger parts of defense programs, organizations have started creating leadership roles around those capabilities. The pace of change has been so fast that companies often use the same title to describe very different responsibilities.

That pace shows up in the hiring data too. Deloitte's 2026 Aerospace and Defense Industry Outlook projects that the share of industrywide job postings requiring data analysis skills will grow from 9% in 2025 to nearly 14% by 2028, with demand for data science skills climbing from 3% to 5% over the same period.

During a recent AI Builders Podcast discussion, I made a simple point: I'd be careful not to get too caught up in titles because they can change really quickly. The mandate underneath the title is usually much more important than the title itself.

Looking Beyond AI Titles

The hiring landscape becomes easier to understand when you look at it in two groups.

The first group sounds AI-related on paper: autonomy leadership, AI and data roles, cyber, digital manufacturing, mission systems. The second doesn't: general manager, P&L owner, operations, program leadership, strategy and M&A.

Despite the different labels, both groups are being pulled forward by the same market forces: new entrants moving faster than legacy processes allow, production shifting toward software-defined systems, and greenfield programs opening leadership seats that never existed before.

A GM search now expects leaders who understand automation, throughput, production planning, and margin improvement, the kind of fluency that didn't sit inside a GM job description a decade ago. Strategy leaders are seeing a similar shift. A strategy or M&A role used to center on market positioning and deal structure. Today it also requires enough understanding of autonomy, software, sensors, and emerging technologies to evaluate where the market is moving and where capability gaps exist. Program leadership has moved the same direction. Managing schedule, cost, quality, and customer expectations has always been central to the role. Today, program leaders overseeing AI-enabled capabilities also need to understand how those technologies are tested, integrated, produced, and trusted by the customer.

None of these are AI titles. All three are being pulled toward the same fluency an AI-adjacent role would require, which is exactly why a title alone stops being a reliable signal of what the job needs.

When the Title and the Mandate Don't Match

A board starts a search with a title. A candidate evaluates the opportunity based on the mandate underneath it. When those two things point in different directions, both sides are working from different assumptions.

Take Head of Autonomy. The title isn't where the value sits. The value is in taking autonomous capability from concept, through testing, into production, until a customer trusts it enough to field it. One company posting that title might mean a leader who owns unmanned platform development end to end. Another might mean someone managing a single autonomy workstream inside a larger program. Same title, different job, and neither company's job posting will tell you which one you're walking into.

The same pattern appears across roles such as Chief Digital Officer or VP of AI and Data. A Chief Digital Officer at one company might focus on internal digital transformation. At another, the same title could mean owning AI-enabled products or software-defined systems. The title alone doesn't tell candidates or boards enough about what the role requires.

The result is a slower search. Companies spend more time defining the role, while candidates spend more time determining whether the mandate matches their experience.

One Title, Multiple Jobs

The ambiguity isn't an accident. It's a byproduct of companies solving different problems and reaching for similar language anyway.

A company standing up a new autonomous platform needs someone who can own it from prototype to fielded system. A manufacturing facility going through modernization needs someone who understands how automation and data change the factory floor. Securing AI-enabled systems against a growing attack surface calls for fluency in export controls and data governance. Bringing a new capability to market requires someone who understands both the engineering behind the technology and how it performs in the field. Four different jobs, and any of them could show up on a posting with "AI" or "digital" in the title.

As long as companies are solving different problems with similar titles, the market is unlikely to settle on one definition for each role.

What Doesn't Change

Across those roles, a few capabilities keep showing up regardless of the title. Leaders need enough technical fluency to understand how autonomy, AI, or digital manufacturing move from concept into production. They need to understand the mission, because engineering decisions affect how a capability performs in the field. Customer trust remains central, especially in government programs where relationships are built over years rather than quarters. They also need to execute, because production schedules, quality, cost, and delivery ultimately determine whether a program succeeds.

What stays consistent is how closely these capabilities are connected. Titles evolve as companies reorganize, launch new programs, adopt new technology, or shift strategic priorities. The ability to earn customer trust, execute complex programs, manage regulatory requirements, and translate technology into operational performance remains valuable regardless of what the role is called.

These four hold steady whether the title says Head of Autonomy or General Manager. Build a search around them and the right leader surfaces regardless of what's printed on the org chart. Build it around the title alone, and the search is betting that the label means the same thing everywhere. It doesn't yet.

What Boards Should Focus On

That changes how executive search should be approached. The starting point should be the mandate rather than the title, because titles are evolving faster than the market has agreed on what they represent.
