
Anthropic is the hardest U.S. technology company to recruit employees away from, based on the assessment I shared during a recent Truist Securities investor call. I ranked OpenAI second, followed by xAI, Palantir, and Google DeepMind.

For a company building its deployment organization, recruiting difficulty directly affects the hiring plan. Identifying a promising candidate is only the beginning. That person still needs a compelling reason to leave.
The Ranking I Shared With Truist
My assessment placed the companies in this order:
- Anthropic
- OpenAI
- xAI
- Palantir
- Google DeepMind
The ranking concerns how difficult it is to recruit employees away from these organizations. An individual candidate’s suitability still depends on the work they have done and the responsibilities they would take on.
Employers should make that distinction before opening a search. Before shortlisting someone, examine the deployments they owned and the results they delivered.
Demand for FDEs Has Risen Quickly
Christian & Timbers conducted a six-month study involving more than 250 C-suite interviews and analysis of over 300 FDEs and AI professionals.
Among the companies studied, the proportion intending to hire FDEs rose from between 5% and 10% at the beginning of 2026 to 70% by the end of June.
That change puts more employers in competition for experienced practitioners. Hiring plans built around the same small group of talent sources become harder to execute as additional organizations enter the market.
Before setting a recruitment timeline, leadership should ask how much of its plan depends on persuading people to leave the companies at the top of this list.
Why Palantir Remains Central to Deployment Hiring
During the call, I described Palantir’s historical concentration of AI transformation talent. The company pioneered the FDE model and trained employees to connect technical implementation with operational responsibility.
Our research estimates that approximately 2,000 elite FDEs in the United States have consistently delivered measurable business value from AI deployments. Nearly 80% of that pool traces its professional lineage to Palantir, according to Christian & Timbers' published findings. That concentration helps explain why so many deployment searches lead back to the same company.
I expect Palantir’s share of FDE talent to decline as competitors build out their own teams. I believe the overall market will grow faster, however, and Palantir will remain a leader.
For employers, that creates a reason to reassess where they look. As practitioners gain deployment experience across more organizations, the range of relevant backgrounds should broaden.
The Companies Employers Target Are Hiring Too
Anthropic and OpenAI have successful deployment teams, although those groups remain relatively small and currently focus on enterprise-scale customers. As I discussed with Truist, both could seek to grow their FDE headcount into the thousands.
That would add hiring pressure to an already competitive market. If these businesses recruit at that scale, how many experienced deployment engineers will be available to everyone else?
