Josh Suresh Appointed Member of Technical Staff at Angle Health

Christian & Timbers is pleased to announce the appointment of Josh Suresh as Member of Technical Staff at Angle Health.

Angle Health is the AI-native healthcare benefits platform for small and mid-sized employers. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in San Francisco, the company combines plan administration, underwriting, navigation, and clinical services on a single platform and offers customized health plans in 47 states to businesses with as few as 2 employees, depending on the state.

In September 2026, Angle Health announced $600 million in new capital at a $2.7 billion valuation, made up of a $200 million Series C led by Vitruvian Partners and a $400 million tender offer. The company serves more than 5,000 employers, reports 120% year-over-year growth, manages nearly $1 billion in annualized premium-equivalents, and has posted 4 consecutive quarters of EBITDA and GAAP net income profitability.

The mandate

A health plan is a forecast. Every policy Angle Health underwrites depends on estimating risk from claims, clinical, and member data, and much of this data is sparse, noisy, and incomplete. A wrong estimate costs the employer money and costs the member care.

As the company scales past 5,000 employers, the technical bar rises with it. Angle Health needed a builder who goes beyond fitting models: someone who designs systems around uncertainty, chooses the right modeling approach for the data available, and produces outputs decision-makers trust with real dollars.

The brief prioritized three things: deep expertise in probabilistic and Bayesian modeling, a record of building inference systems used in high-stakes decisions, and hands-on fluency with modern machine learning tooling, including transformers and agentic workflows.

The candidate

Josh Suresh is a physicist and computational scientist trained at MIT and Harvard. His work centers on training interpretable models on noisy, high-dimensional data and using those models to drive better, risk-aware decisions.

He joins Angle Health from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he spent more than 9 years at the Institute for Disease Modeling, first as Research Scientist starting in 2017, when the institute was part of Intellectual Ventures, and from 2021 as Senior Research Scientist. He led the design and development of simulation and inference systems informing global health strategy and multi-hundred-million-dollar investment decisions.

Selected work includes:

• A fully differentiable epidemiological model in JAX with Bayesian inference (HMC/NUTS) and latent-state estimation, producing uncertainty-aware optimization of disease control policies orders of magnitude faster than existing approaches.
• A Bayesian Monte Carlo forecasting model for Guinea worm eradication, built from sparse surveillance data on a turnaround of a few days. The results contributed to the reallocation of a ~$150M budget.
• A mechanistic model of how transmission dynamics imprint on parasite genetic data, showing where proposed surveillance metrics held up and where they were confounded. The work sharpened the targeting of ~$15M a year in genomic surveillance spend.
• A spatial transmission model explaining the unexpected null result of a major clinical trial in Mozambique. The analysis exposed a critical failure mode in the prevailing eradication strategy and contributed to a complete strategic overhaul.
• A model of community health-worker deployment showing current protocols could reach similar impact with roughly 10x less work, giving Zambia quantitative rationale to simplify caseloads across its ~40,000-worker program.

He also tested transformer and RNN models in PyTorch on detailed malaria time series to isolate the role of attention versus short-term memory, and prototyped an adversarial scientific-review workflow in which AI agents champion competing hypotheses and critique each other's reasoning.

Before the Gates Foundation, Josh earned a Ph.D. in Astrophysics at Harvard University, advised by Lars Hernquist, where he worked on large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations run on supercomputer clusters to study galaxy growth over cosmic time. He holds a dual B.S. in Physics and Mathematics, with a minor in Philosophy, from MIT.

The fit

Healthcare benefits and global health share a core problem: high-stakes decisions made on imperfect data. Josh has spent his career on this problem, first modeling galaxies, then modeling disease transmission for governments and funders allocating hundreds of millions of dollars. He chooses between mechanistic, stochastic, differentiable, and Bayesian approaches based on the data in front of him, and he quantifies uncertainty instead of hiding it.

At Angle Health, where underwriting, pricing, and member care all depend on prediction, this discipline turns directly into better plans for employers and better outcomes for members.

"AI-native companies need technical staff who understand the math under the model. Josh has built inference systems where a wrong answer meant misallocated millions and missed public health targets. He brings first-principles rigor and a builder's speed, and Angle Health gets both."

Congratulations, Josh. We look forward to watching you build at Angle Health.
